(Shanghai Daily, Sep 05, 2006) GD Power Development Co, a unit of one of China's five largest electricity producers, agreed to invest 750 million yuan (US$94 million) in a hydroelectric plant in northeastern China to meet rising demand.

GD Power will invest in the Sihugou hydropower plant in Antu County, which can generate as much as 300,000 megawatt-hours of electricity a year, the Jilin government said on its Website yesterday. China, the world's largest electricity consumer after the United States, is turning to alternative energy sources such as hydro power to cope with shortages and to reduce pollution. Coal-burning now fires 67 percent of the country's power plants.
