(The Star, Sep 06, 2006) -- An explosion at an illegal detonator workshop in central China killed four people and injured about a dozen others, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Wednesday. The blast ripped through the building in Henan province's Mengke township on Tuesday, Xinhua said in a brief report. The injured were hospitalized and police were investigating the cause, the report said. Such deadly explosions are common among China's vast and largely unregulated explosives and fireworks industries, with workshops usually operating secretly in rural areas and materials stored in homes and shops. Most of the explosives are used in renegade coal mining or quarrying, industries that also kill thousands of Chinese every year. |
