(China Coal Resource, Sep 08, 2006) --Small coalmines under operation in central China's Henan province have reduced by 62% from 1569 mines in 2004 to the present 592 mines, thanks to the efforts of Henan provincial government devoted to mineral resources consolidation in the past two years.

Previously, there were some 6000 small coalmines in Henan province, most of which were poorly equipped in irrational distribution, said the Land and Resources Department of Henan province. The random and excessive exploitation had resulted in not only frequent occurrence of accidents, but also resource exhaustion.

To consolidate resources, the province firstly intensified the supervision over small coalmines, and raised the entry permission starting from the year 2004, and then unveiled the Coal Statute of Henan Province in September 2005 to stop the excessive exploitation of small mines.

The new round of mineral resources consolidation launched since 2006 requires one or two predominant mineral resources to be selected by each city directly under the provincial government to conduct resources consolidation.

Due to these efforts, the province has witnessed a sharp reduction in small coalmines, and meanwhile, the recovery rate in mining areas also has improved to 80% or more, up by 20% comparing with two years ago.
