(CCTV, Oct 27, 2006) Motoring clubs and non-governmental environmental protection organizations in Beijing are calling on Beijing residents to drive less to protect the environment and clean up the air for the 2008 Olympics. The move is in line with official actions on Thursday to restrict the use of vehicles during the China-Africa forum.
About 180 organizations launched a major environmental protection campaign in Beijing on Thursday. The organizers said from Oct. 26 to Nov.5, especially during the China-Africa forum, civil servants have been told to leave their cars at home and other drivers are encouraged to drive less. They are promoting the use of buses and bikes as alternative means of transport to reduce pollution. Beijing residents are getting behind the initiatives and currently, a campaign to drive one day less each month has caught on in the capital. source:CCTV |
