(Sina.com, Oct 31, 2006) Sources from China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) disclosed on Oct. 30 that the company would dispatch in Nov. 2006 a delegation to negotiate with Iraq Government on the issue of exploration of the Ahdab Oilfield in central-South Iraq. Several years ago, CNPC was granted the right to exploit the oilfield by former Iraq government. The contract, however, was suspended due to the breakout of the Iraq War. It is disclosed that the Iraq government is re-examining the contract, and CNPC is hopeful to regain the oilfield exploitation right.

The visiting Iraqi Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani said on Oct. 28 that CNPC was welcomed to take part in reconstruction of oil facilities in Iraq, that each of the two sides would dispatch a delegation of three to four people to discuss specific matters concerning exploration of an oilfield in central-South Iraq, and that the Iraq Government would offer preferential terms to the Chinese oil giant in this regard.
