(CCTV, Nov 29, 2006) China has piloted an Ultra High Voltage grid project in the north, launching the country's move to transmit power over long distances through 1,000 kilovolt alternating grids.

China's current power transmission network is about 500 kilovolts. The UHV's transforming capacity is five times that of the current one and costs less. China has developed the UHV transmission network to explore new ways to feed the demand of energy-thirsty east and central China. The first pilot project will be around 650 kilometers long. The state plans to build more UHV grids, aiming to construct a power grid covering north and east China by 2020.
