Largest hydropower project on Yellow River officially launched

Shanghai.  April  17.  INTERFAX-CHINA  -  The construction of the Laxiwa
hydropower  project,  the  largest  on  the Yellow River, was officially
launched on April 15.
                               The project  is located on the mainstream of the Yellow River in Qinghai Province, in China's arid northwest. It is the second staired hydropower project on the upper stream of the Yellow River between the Longyang and Qingtong gorges, state news agency Xinhua reported.
                              The "preliminary  construction" of the project began in 2001, four years before it was formally approved by the government. Six workers have died in two separate accidents at the construction site last year and in March this year.
                              RMB 12.1  bln  (USD  1.51 bln) has been earmarked for the project, which will consist of six 700-MW generators and a maximum dam height at 250 m.
                              The first  generation unit is expected to go into operation in 2008, and
it is expected to be finished in 2010, when 10.22 mln MWh of electricity
can be generated annually.-TW
