China’s power enterprises’ loss reach RMB 12.7 bln in 2005

Apr. 25, 2006 (China Knowledge) - Some 1,280 enterprises in the power industry incurred losses of up to RMB 12.7 billion in 2005, according to the report Operation Analysis in 2005 and the Trend Forecast in 2006 on China’s Power Industry issued by the National Development and Reform Commission of China (NDRC).

Within that figure, the number of thermal power plants rose by 3.4%, and the sum of losses rose by 10.1%. This is despite the 2% rise in profits and 19% increase in sales revenues.

In addition, in the first half of 2005, among China’s five largest electricity plants, there were two unprofitable enterprises and the other three had marginal profits or just broke even.

These five players include the China Huaneng Group, Huadian Power International Corp. Ltd., China Guodian Corp., China Power Investment Cor. and China Datang Corp.

Meanwhile, the source from China Electricity Council (CEC) also shows the loss-making percentage of China’s power industry reached 27.12%.
