China Clean Development Mechanism Summit 2009

Clean Development Mechanisms

CER buyers and Chinese manufacturing plants have continued to expand their business in China since the adoption of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. For now, China has no pressure to reduce carbon emissions but it is home to the largest supply of potential emission reducing project options in the world.

BEIJING, China 26-27 February, 2009 - Noppen's "China Clean Development Mechanism Summit 2009", which took place at the Marriott West, was a platform for practitioners in the CDM sector from China and abroad, to exchange information, network and conduct business. The event brought to light interesting discussions and concluded that the CDM market has been affected by the financial crunch but the outlook is still positive regarding the post-2012 climate change regime. In addition, the general consensus among delegates was that the currently low CER price would rally again in the near future. Other topics of interest included issues relating to CDM registration and issuance.

A representative from the Henan CDM Environment & Technology Service Center said of the event, "good organization and a good opportunity provided for learning and communication". CONCH's representative said, "Many keynote speakers' attendance led to a good conference and we obtained the latest policy information."

Distinguished speakers shared their industry insights and among them was Gao Guangfeng, Inspector, Office of NCCCC, NDRC (topic: China's CDM policies and progress); Dr. Lu Xuedu, Deputy Director, Office of Global Environmental Affairs, Ministry of Science and Technology (topic: analysis on issues on CDM and its future); Magnus Gislev, First Secretary for Environment, European Commission Delegation to China (topic: what changes are needed to help the CDM fit in the post-2012 climate regime?); Daniele Violetti, Manager, Registration and Issuance, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) (topic: CDM registration and issuance); Mr. Qian Xiaomin, Managing Director, Emissions Products, ING Bank N.V.
